Dudley D. “Pete” Combs
Memorial Scholarship

1940 – 2000 • Lieutenant Colonel, US Army

Pete was born in Gilbert, Arizona, and spent the majority of his youth growing up in Prescott, Arizona. After serving as an up and coming store manager in the Safeway grocery store chain, Pete enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Upon successful completion of his first enlistment, he returned to Arizona and enrolled in the University of Arizona, earning a bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

In Vietnam, then Captain Combs served two tours as a Platoon Leader, a Company Commander, and the Aide to the Commanding General of the Big Red One, earning both a Purple Heart and a Silver Star.

Only surpassing Pete’s love and commitment to country, was his devotion as a husband and father. His impact on our nation is still felt today through the service of his children and grandson.

An avid outdoorsman, he had a deep love affair with the Desert Southwest. He loved camping, skeet shooting, and chasing quail, all typically done with a Labrador puppy by his side.

“Leave it a little bit better than you found it.” These were the words that Pete Combs was often heard saying, and in his personal, professional and private life, Pete Combs strived every day to do exactly this; we honor his legacy by allowing him to continue doing so today.
